The Geraldine R. Dodge Postdoctoral Fellows

The inaugural Geraldine R. Dodge Fellow, Dr. Erika Bsumek, created City Children and Their Cultures, a mainstay of the Institute’s programmatic work. Her efforts were followed by Dr. George White, III, who guided the Institute toward public television in its two part post-911 retrospective with NJN, Why Us, Why Now, What’s Next? The third Dodge Fellow, Dr. Rosamond King created two path breaking initiatives, Newark Reads DuBois and Voices of the City, out of which a book was published, a public radio series of excerpts from The Souls of Black Folk was broadcast, and thousands of citizens, Newark residents in the main, and many for the first time, read DuBois, and wrote poetry. The Watching Carefully media literacy initiative was created by the fourth Geraldine R. Dodge Postdoctoral Fellow Miriam J. Petty, and consisted of two major components; a documentary film series, and a workshop series at the Newark Boys and Girls Club. Fifth Dodge Fellow Dr. Christina Collins organized a series of community discussions on education reform in Newark, and a community meeting on school safety. Dr. Collins’ documentary project she produced while at the Institute focuses on the experiences of young people in Newark during the 1967 disorders. The sixth and current Dodge Fellow is Dr. Mark Krasovic, who comes to the Institute from Princeton University.
